Athletes help others
I m often asked how a person goes
about training for a marathon or
One foot in front of the other
was how I was taught, but I know
there s a lot more than that. My
advice is to go and talk to an expert.
While I am not an expert on
marathon running, fortunately I
know some people who are.
For anyone keen to get into
marathons, the best way to do it is
by attending a half-marathon
course called Running 101.
This course is put on by Sport
Manawatu and the Manawatu
Striders. The course is coached by
Chris Sanson, one of the region s top
athletes, who regularly coaches and
trains others to run marathons.
Running 101 is specifically
targeted toward first-time half-
marathoners. Meeting once a week
for eight weeks, it ends with
participants completing a half-
marathon at the Striders Half
Marathon event on August 12.
Throughout the eight weeks you ll
get some terrific advice and tips
from different experts.
Topics include training drills,
techniques to run better, getting the
right gear, where to run and

Participants need to be 18 or over
and a first-time half-marathoner
needs to be able to jog for at least 20
minutes non-stop (even slowly).
Registrations are open now with
the first class on June 20, 5.30pm.
