Summer fun: Palmerstonians have always headed to Foxton Beach during a long, hot January.

Put your business back into high gear
Is Greece defaulting, Portugal
exploding, the Euro imploding?
Whatever, who gives a toss? What
will be, will be.
What happens on the other side of
the world isn't going to affect your
business as much as the decisions
you make. There's more than
enough opportunity for all
businesses -- you just have to be
prepared to go after it.
Here are a few tips to get 2012 off
to a good start.
Firstly be positive, enthusiastic
and put your back into it.
Depression is hardly inspiring.
Decide how much you're going to
sell and how much money you're
going to make. With your eye on the
pot of gold at the end of the rainbow
(it might be a smallish pot), get out
there and start making it happen.
To achieve your sales target you
will need to find some new
customers and entice your existing
customers to return. Have a look at
your promotional strategy to see if it
is targeted in the right areas to
bring in new customers and
aggressive enough to be noticed.
You may have to look beyond Mana-
It's not unusual for me to find
businesses that have no marketing
strategy and spend no money trying
to attract new customers. Their
strategy is to open the door and
They say Oh, our best marketing
is word of mouth.'' Word of mouth
works much better when you open
your mouth and start shouting why
people should buy from you.
Many businesses are dinosaurs
lost in the past. Before you become
extinct come up with some new
innovations. New products or
services will keep your customers
interested. If you're still doing the
same thing you did five years ago,
no wonder no-one buys from you. Do
a makeover before you get taken
Inspire your staff to become a top
performing team. Top teams always
outperform others. How good is your
team? You will go much better if you
have great people, doing a great job,
all on the same bus. If you can't get
your poor performers to lift their
game and deliver, then export them
to Australia or to your competitors.
Prepare a list of things you're
going to do. If you write them down
and allocate jobs to your team,
everyone will achieve more. It's
really hard for others to read your
mind and this is made even harder
when there's nothing in there to
read to start with.
And finally, get advice from some-
one who can quickly spot what you
need to do and can give you a boot
up the backside to get you going.
