Repair service comes to the rescue
Ready to sew: Sue's Repairs and Alteration Services owner Sue Hill, back right, with her team.
Help! A favourite pair of pants
or a classic dress that needs
letting out after the holiday
excesses -- or even (pleasant
surprise) taken in. That jolly busted
zipper! The item of clothing off
TradeMe that doesn't quite hang right
or needs taking up.
Pity to hide those garments at the
bottom of the drawer or in the back of
the wardrobe when there's plenty of
good wear and style left in them.
Help is at hand.
The clothing lifesavers hang out at
Sue's Repairs and Alteration Services in
Terrace End. Here, a team of talented
seamstresses alter and redesign
garments to fit -- because everyone
has impulse purchases, or old
favourites they simply can't bear to
part with. Even the latest designer
must-haves from fashion boutiques
sometimes need tweaking to make
them fit just right.
"We can recreate a garment to make
it look like it was 'made to measure' or
update it to suit today's fashion styles,"
says Sue's owner Sue Hill.
"Sometimes all it may take is
changing a hemline, or the shape of a
collar. Men may also want a jacket
altered, or the flare removed from a
trouser pant. Alterations are a cost-
effective way to get more use of out of
Certainly the staff at Sue's get some
bemusing requests, unusual remakes
and overhauls, but then, they thrive on
that kind of challenge. From
shortening and lengthening skirts and
trousers, to remodelling padded
shoulders, collar shapes and leg
widths, and replacing zippers, it's all in
a day's work
"What makes it all worthwhile is the
thanks and gratitude of our
customers," Sue smiles.
Last year, Sue's Repairs and
Alteration Services did some
alterations and remodelling of their
own, expanding through the wall into
the former Coin Save at the Ruahine
Street end of Broadway just along
from Coffee on the Terrace.
Not only has this given staff more
room, but there is a designated ''bridal
lounge'' where gowns can be
modelled and modified. Buying a new
wedding dress online from an
international fashion house can mean
paying Sue's Repairs and Alteration
Services a visit.
"As this doesn't allow a final fitting,
brides are bringing their dresses to us
to be altered to fit them perfectly," Sue
"The same applies often with the
bridesmaid's dresses. They are able to
purchase these dresses online for
much less than the cost of the fabric in
Getting these dresses and outfits
properly fitted can now be done in
comfort, with members of the bridal
party able to meet with Sue's pattern-
makers and tailors in a private,
"The Palmerston North team are all
experienced and qualified tailors.
They're all meticulous in their work
and pay close attention to a quality
finish. We can assure our customers of
100-percent satisfaction in our quality
workmanship," Sue says.
