Work with nature
for the best roses

In my book Wally's Down to Earth
Garden Guide, the first chapter is
on roses, because if there is one gar-
den plant I am asked more about,
over all other plants, it is roses.
Gardeners and even non-gardeners
love their roses and go out of their
way to have great-looking
Roses do best if you throw away
your chemical rose foods and sprays
and give them the more natural
things that make them healthy and
You need a little Key Pyrethrum
and Neem Tree Oil for the aphids
and any other pests that might
attack the roses. Ensure the roses
have sufficient minerals by applying
a little Ocean Solids and Rok Solid
to the soil in the root zone.
Ocean Solids is applied once a
year and the Rok Solid twice a year
in spring and autumn.
A two-weekly spray of Magic Bot-
anic Liquid (MBL) will make a big
difference; if you have been using
chemical fertiliser or sprays drench
the soil with MBL now and then
again in three months' time.
Avoid using herbicides near your
roses; they can reduce the health of
plants because of the chemical's
effect on the soil food web.
Herbicides are also deadly to roses if
there is a whiff of spray drift.
The soil food web is vital to plants
and should be nurtured more than
one would nurture the plants grow-
ing in the soil. Rose fertiliser should
not be applied as its acid nature can
damage the web. The non use of
herbicides, chemical fertilisers and
sprays means my soil is teeming
with worms, the sign of healthy soil.
If you do not have chicken
manure or other animal manure
available, you can provide natural
base foods such as sheep manure
pellets, blood and bone and animal
Every week I receive emails and
phone calls from gardeners who
have adopted the natural methods I
write about and they all tell me they
have never had such great gardens
as they now have. Many tell me that
after years of struggling to obtain
healthy-looking roses (and other
plants), using rose sprays and rose
fertilisers to no avail, they have
changed to the natural foods and
Within a season or two all the
past problems have disappeared
and now their roses are even better
than they had ever hoped for. There
is no secret to this, just work with
nature, not against it. If you try to
work against nature all you end up
with is chemical warfare and both
you and the plants are the losers.
So what should you be doing with
your roses? Ensure they have a
little potash and magnesium each
month. This can be applied as Fruit
and Flower Power (mix of both in
balance) or alternatively a little pot-
ash and Epsom salts. Dolomite and
gypsum can also be sprinkled every
couple of months for the calcium/
sulphur/ magnesium these products
supply. Calcium is very important
for the health of soil food web.
When aphids or other insects are
around, a simple spray of Key
Pyrethrum and Neem Tree Oil, just
prior to dusk, will keep them under
Roses that repeat flower through
the season should be dead-headed
as the blooms finish.
With newly planted roses just nip
off the dead flower head without
removing any leaves.
A new rose needs all its leaves to
gain energy from the sun. Estab-
lished roses -- second year or older,
should be cut further back taking
some stem and leaves with the dead
This encourages new growth and
your next lot of buds and flowers.
Established roses can be cut for
vases, but not first-year roses.
Gardeners who have roses they
are not proud of can follow the fol-
lowing procedure to obtain healthy
Stop using chemicals near or
on the roses.
Drench the soil with Magic
Botanic Liquid (MBL) and
Mycorrcin combined and spray
the plants with the same.
Sprinkle a little Ocean
Solids, Rok Solid, dolomite,
sheep manure pellets (or ani-
mal manure) and blood and
bone around the root zone,
then cover the products with
compost. Water in with MBL
Twice a month till mid aut-
umn spray the soil and the
plants with the same two
products. Use Key Pyrethrum
and Neem Tree Oil if insects
attack the plants.
In March apply dolomite,
blood and bone, and sheep
pellets and cover with more
improvements the first season
but more so next season.
If you have nice healthy
roses a monthly spray of MBL
and Mycorrcin over the foliage
and soil should be sufficient.
Feed the roses the natural
foods as required, covering
In the late autumn/early
winter your roses will start
preparing for their winter rest
and you should not be con-
cerned about any blemishing
of the foliage.

Inspirational teacher dies
By MICHELLE GREY
I'VE LOST a good friend, or at least
that's what it felt like, and yet I'd
never actually met him.
Jerry Hicks of Abraham-Hicks, Law
of Attraction fame, died on November
22. He was in his late 80s and had led
an amazing life, particularly the past
25 years, with his wife Esther and the
group of non-physical teachers
If you're a regular follower of my
column (and I'm hoping there might be
one or two of you), you'll know how
much the Law of Attraction has
influenced my life in recent years, and
how passionate I am about it.
Discovering Abraham-Hicks' books
and DVDs led to the establishment of
Inspire Me two years ago; the most
amazing holiday of my life this year
(including the Law of Attraction
Cruise) and the move to our wonderful
new location in The Square.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to
Jerry reading Abraham's words every
day as we travelled around Canada in
a campervan enjoying the scenery. I'd
plug my iPod into one ear, leaving the
other free in case Peter wanted to chat,
but truth be told he was happy with
the peace as I can be rather chatty.
Esther Hicks sent a beautiful email
to everyone on their mailing list a few
days after Jerry died and I'd like to
share a wee piece of it with you.
Over the years, Abraham has con-
sistently insisted that there is no
death. Again and again they have
reminded us that there is only life and
more life and more life. It has taken
me some time to understand this, and
I honestly must say I have not yet fully
come to terms with it, but I do believe
that in what we are calling Jerry's
death he is discovering the next logical
step of life that Abraham has always
been talking about.
And at times I am catching a
glimpse of the bigness of what Jerry is
feeling and while I am still pretty mad
at him for not sticking around longer to
surprise and delight me in all the ways
he has been doing throughout our 30
years together, I accept fully that the
next logical step of joyous life for Jerry
was to be found in his re-emergence
Since 1985 it has been Jerry and
Esther and Abraham and I believe
with everything that I am that that
has not changed. I know that Jerry will
continue to be the third powerful point
of the triad of Energy that makes up
the Abraham experience and I am cer-
tain that his new vantage point will be,
as it has always been, of advantage to
See you in the Vortex Jerry.
